Two arrested for alleged involvement in illegal gambling activities

KUCHING: A foreign man was among two persons arrested by police Saturday for alleged involvement in illegal gambling activities at a coffee shop in Jalan Penrissen here.

Padawan police chief Supt Abang Zainal Abidin Abang Ahmad in a statement yesterday said the first suspect, a 35-yearold from Kalimantan Barat, was arrested on suspicion of being an illegal lottery agent.

“During the arrest, the suspect was also found to be without any valid travelling documents,” he said.

Abang Zainal Abidin added that police also seized a smartphone, a piece of paper containing numbers believed to be bets from punters, and RM196 in cash.

He added a background check revealed the suspect did not have a past criminal record.

“During interrogation, the man admitted that he was working as an illegal lottery agent at the premises,” said Abang Zainal Abidin.

The suspect is being investigated under Section 4A(a) of the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953 and Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63.

As for the second suspect, Abang Zainal Abidin said the 33year-old local man was arrested for allegedly selling illegal online gambling top-ups.

“Seized from the suspect were a smartphone and RM148 in cash. A background check revealed he has a past criminal record for illegal gambling under Section 4(1)(c) of the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953,” he added.

The second suspect is being investigated under Section 4(1)(c) of the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953.
