Junkie fined RM7,800 for possessing, abusing drugs

KUCHING: A 24-year-old man was fined a total of RM7,800 in default 12 months in jail after he pleaded guilty in separate Magistrates’ Courts here yesterday to charges of possessing and abusing drugs.

Yeremiah Tommy made the plea before Magistrate Syarifah Fatimah Azura Wan Ali to a charge of possessing 0.3g of methamphetamine, and a second charge of abusing amphetamine and methamphetamine.

On the charge of possessing drugs, framed under Section 12(2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act (DDA) 1952 and punishable under Section 12(3) of the same Act, the court fined him RM2,900 in default six months’ jail.

He committed the offence in a car parked behind a shop at Premier 101 Commercial Centre here at around 12.05am on May 13, 2022.

Based on the facts of the case, a police patrol team conducted an inspection on his car and, upon checking a sling bag in the back seat, found a packet inside containing substance believed to be drugs.

A chemist report later confirmed the substance to be methamphetamine, weighing 0.3g.

On the charge of abusing drugs, framed under Section 15(1)(a) of the DDA and punishable under Section 15(1) of the same Act, Yeremiah was fined RM2,100 in default three months’ jail and ordered to undergo two years of police supervision.

He was tested positive for amphetamine and methamphetamine at the Sarawak Contingent police headquarters at 11.10pm on Dec 7, 2021.

In a separate court, Yeremiah pleaded guilty before Magistrate Zubaidah Sharkawi to a second charge of abusing drugs, and was fined RM2,800 in default three months’ jail. The court also placed him under two years of police supervision.

According to the charge sheet, he tested positive for amphetamine and methamphetamine at the Kuching Narcotics Criminal Investigation Division office at 2.40am on May 13, 2022.

Insp Mohd Adzmei Ahmad and Insp Nur Syafiqa Nyaie Ilin prosecuted the two cases separately, while Yeremiah appeared in court without legal representation.
