South Korea and Japan blank opponents on first day

There were no major upsets on the first day of the ITF World Tennis Junior Team Competition U14 Boys Asia Oceania Final Qualifying played here yesterday.

All top four seeded teams won their matches in their respective groups.

In Group A, top seeded South Korea faced little problem defeating Thailand 3-0, with Cho Min Nyuk delivering the first and final points.

Cho won the first singles by defeating Ryu Kutikola 7-6, 6-1 before pairing with Kim Dong Win to secure the third point by beating the pair of Ryu and Kantat Surarityotin 6-3, 6-2.

The second point was won by Kim Wong Min in defeating Dharma Pantaratorn 6-3, 6-2.

Second seeded Australia suffered an early scare before eventually beating Singapore 2-1 in Group D.

Anthony Nikolas lost to Luke Ho 4-6, 5-7 in the first singles before Cooper Kose levelled for his team by beating Zachary Sng 6-2, 6-1.

Kose then partnered Taiki Takizawa to defeat the pair of Ho and Sng 6-1, 6-1 to secure the winning point.

Third seeded Japan defeated Iran 3-0 in Group B while fourth seeded Hong Kong narrowly overcame New Zealand 2-1.

In another Group A match, sixth seeded Uzbekistan defeated Kyrgyzstan 3-0 while the other Group B match saw eighth seeded Pakistan edging Indonesia 2-1.

The other match in Group C saw an upset as fifth seeded India lost 0-3 to Chinese Taipei while Kazakhstan won 2-1 against Jordan in Group D.

Today’s Group A clashes will see South Korea facing Kyrgyzstan while Uzbekistan play against Thailand.

In Group B, Japan will meet Indonesia while Iran face Pakistan.

In Group D, Australia will meet Jordan while Singapore face Kazakhstan.

The top two from each group will qualify for the quaterfinals while the bottom two will be playing in the 9th to 16th playoffs.

Teams finishing in the top four will qualify to represent Asia-Oceania at the ITF World Tennis Junior Team Competition U14 Boys finals in Czech Republic in August.
