SIBU: A man, 27, was sentenced to two years' jail and four strokes of the cane by the Sessions Court yesterday after he pleaded guilty to a robbery charge.

Mohamad Faizal Mohamad Jawarie, who was unrepresented by a counsel, was charged under Section 392 of the Penal Code which provides for a maximum 14 years' jail and also be liable to whipping.

According to the charge sheet, he stole a 46-year-old woman's phone and had threatened to hurt her at the guardhouse of a primary school in Jalan Bukit Assek about 11.40am on Feb 1.

The woman was said to be sitting at a chair opposite the guardhouse when an unknown man suddenly grabbed her mobile phone.

She then lodged a police report. Following investigation, the accused was arrested at Lorong Teku about 10.50am on March 25.

DPP Rex Heng Yi Min prosecuted while Judge Marutin Pagan presided over the case.
