Man jailed 5 years for wielding knife at passer-by

SIBU: A man, 43, who was caught on a video wielding a knife at a passer-by December last year was sentenced to five years' jail and one stroke of the cane by the Sessions Court yesterday.

Ling Pick Teck, who was unrepresented by counsel, pleaded guilty to the charge framed under Section 6(1) of Corrosive and Explosive Substances Act 1958 for possessing an offensive weapon in a public place.

The Section provides for a minimum jail term of five years and maximum jail term of 10 years and whipping upon conviction.

According to the charge sheet, Ling was found to have in his possession a knife at Jalan Bukit Assek about 9pm on Dec 27, 2022.

Based on the fact of the case, Ling pointed a knife to a road user near the temple here about 10.30am on Dec 27, 2022.

The incident was videorecorded by a member of a public. Acting on information, the police arrested him at Jalan Bukit Assek at around 9pm on the same day (Dec 27).

DPP Rex Heng Yi Min prosecuted the case before Judge Marutin Pagan.
