KAPIT: Kapit District Council (KDC) will organise recycling programmes in schools here every year as part of efforts to reduce domestic waste and promote the 3Rs (reduce, recycle and reuse) among teachers and students.
In stating this, KDC walikota Lating Minggang said such programmes are part of the national cleanliness policy that aims to promote recycling activities at the community level and educational institutions.
“On the council’s part, we will make this 3R campaign an annual event so that the educators and students can spread the message on the importance of reducing domestic waste,” he said.
Lating said this in his speech when officiating at a 3R programme held at SMK Kapit 2 on Wednesday, which was also attended by students and teachers from nearby primary and secondary schools.
The programme featured a speech competition for primary and secondary school students where participants vied for the KDC Walikota Trophy, as well as a `Mini InnoWaste’ competition.
The speech competition for secondary school students was won by SMK Kapit’s Aqilah Zaliruh Abdul Talip, with Alexius Sefney Peter from SMK Baleh in second and Eryanna Dania Muhd Annuar from SMK Kapit 2 in third.
For the primary school level, Alicies Amoy Gara and Amisha Rani Jerelas – both from SK Sungai Kapit – emerged champion and first runner-up, respectively.
The Mini InnoWaste competition saw teams from SMK Kapit 2 grab the top three prizes with their innovative entries `Organic Sleeping Lamp’, `Bottle Sharpener’ and `Bottle Beatbox’.
Among those present were KDC secretary Kelimbik Sibat and SMK Kapit 2 principal Azaman Hailee.
