Kuching Love Book Association holds blood donation drive
KUCHING: Kuching Love Book Association will be holding its 10th blood donation campaign at Vivacity Megamall tomorrow (Dec 2) from 10am to 3pm.
The event is organised in response to Sarawak General Hospital Blood Bank’s need to help solve the problem of insufficient blood stock.
“We hope that people from all walks of life will actively attend and support this meaningful blood donation event and help people in urgent need of blood.
“One donation of blood can save three lives,” said Kuching Love Book Association founder and chairperson May Loo in a statement.
“I would like to thank the sponsors, 38 Yayasan Amal Cinta, Supreme Consolidated Resources Sdn Bhd, Everrise Departmental Store Sdn Bhd, and Wecare Bakery.
“Thank you, too, to the support unit of Sarawak General Hospital Blood Bank. The association is very grateful to Vivacity Megamall for providing the blood donation venue,” added Loo.
According to the Red Cross Blood Transfusion Service Centre, different components in the blood will be separated during the blood-processing process.
After being tested for viruses and bacteria, they will be used to treat different diseases. Therefore, with a pack of blood (that contains red blood cells and white blood cells, platelets, plasma and coagulation factors and other components of blood), three or more patients can be treated.
Anyone who weighs 45kg and is over 18 years old is eligible to donate blood, while those who are 17 years old and under must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
The whole blood donation process only takes five to 30 minutes, depending on the individual’s constitution.
Those interested in donating must ensure that they have had at least five hours of sleep, breakfast, and must refrain from consuming alcoholic beverages for eight hours the night before.
The first 80 successful donors will receive a goody bag that includes an eco-bag, T-shirt, stress ball, 5kg of white rice, Milo, milk, milk powder, and biscuit.
