G&B team honoured at National Sports Technology Innovation Award
G&B team emerged as the winner of the highly esteemed National Sports Technology Innovation Award 2023 under the International Category.
The event was jointly organised by the National Institute of Sports Malaysia, the Ministry of Youth and Sports and the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation, and National Technology and Innovation Sandbox on Tuesday at Putrajaya Marriot Hotel.
The award was presented by Youth and Sports Deputy Minister Adam Adli Abd Halim while Deputy Minister of Science, Technology, and Innovation Datuk Arthur Joseph Kurup and ISN chief executive officer Ahmad Faedzal were among those who graced the event.
The team’s innovative product, the Golf Swing Path Trainer (SPT), has revolutionised golf training methods and caught the attention of experts in the field locally and abroad.
SPT is a result of relentless research, development, and testing by a team of academicians and industry experts in sports science and golf comprising team leader Assoc Prof Dr Garry Kuan and Brenden Tang Yew Liang of USM, Prof Dr Tang Heen Yeong of Access Hitech Automation Sdn Bhd and Dr Chin Ngien Siong of IPG Kampus Batu Lintang.
This innovative tool provides a visual guide aid for golfers to improve their swing plane and club path, ultimately enhancing their contact impact with the ball. It allows golfers to adjust their plane angle and achieve consistent ball flight, providing instant and accurate visual feedback.
Its small size, lightweight nature, portability, affordability, and effectiveness make it an invaluable teaching aid.
In addition, the team has displayed another outstanding achievement by winning the Gold Award in the recent prestigious 34th International Invention, Innovation and Technology Exhibition (ITEX 2023), Malaysia with more than 700 entries from 19 countries and regions.
“Winning the National Sports Technology Innovation Award (International Category) represents a major milestone for the team and products such as the Golf Swing Path Trainer.
“Through research, development, and assessment, we have revolutionised golf training methods and garnered recognition from esteemed individuals in the field,” said Kuan.
“This achievement is a testament to our team’s persistence, dedication, and innovative thinking. As we continue on our journey, we are fuelled by the spirit of collaboration and motivated to make an even greater impact in the world of sports technology,” he said and expressed the team’s gratitude to USM for their continuous support in research and innovation.
